St. Joseph’s Health Care Power Plant Expansion

St. Joseph’s Health Care Power Plant Expansion

Category: Health Care

Client: St. Joseph’s Health Care London

Consultant: Nicholson Sheffield Architects

Location: London, ON

The SJHC Power Plant expansion is a large addition to the existing Power Plant on Commissioners Road in London. It was designed as part of the larger enabling works project with the Regional Mental Health Care in London.

The expansion provides a source of steam and electricity for District Energy Customers (such as St. Joseph’s Health Care and London Health Sciences Centre). In addition, the expansion provides sufficient additional steam and electrical power to fulfill long-term projected growth requirements, for both the London Health Sciences Centre and the Parkwood Campus.

Our contract scope included the supply and installation of an 80,000 lbs-per-hour steam boiler to increase the plant’s steam generating capacity. It also incorporates space for: a gas turbine, a central control room, administrative offices, a lunchroom, and other workspaces. The steam is piped through the rear of the expansion, and routed to the existing Parkwood Hospital, and the Regional Mental Health Care London Facility. The utilitarian expansion allows natural light to penetrate deep into the building, via raised windows, carefully arranged workspaces, and abundant internal glazing. This, in turn, creates a pleasant environment for the plant’s staff, while conserving electricity.
